Discover more about GrainCorp Sheep Hills Silo Art

Located in the heart of Victoria's Wimmera-Mallee region, the Sheep Hills Silo Art is a captivating testament to the power of public art and its ability to revitalize rural communities. Melbourne-based artist Adnate, known for his portraits of Indigenous people, created this stunning mural in 2016, transforming the GrainCorp silos into a vibrant canvas that celebrates the area's rich Aboriginal culture. The artwork features portraits of Wergaia Elder Uncle Ron Marks and Wotjobaluk Elder Aunty Regina Hood, alongside two young children, Savannah Marks and Curtly McDonald. The night sky backdrop represents elements of local Dreamtime stories, symbolizing the important exchange of wisdom and customs between generations. Adnate's intention was to shine a spotlight on the area's young Indigenous people and highlight their strong connection to their elders. The silos themselves were built in 1938 and stand as a reminder of the region's agricultural heritage. The Sheep Hills Silo Art is the fifth set of silos to be included in the Australian Silo Art Trail and the third in the Wimmera-Mallee region. The Silo Art Trail was created through a partnership between the Yarriambiack Shire Council, Juddy Roller, the Victorian and Australian Governments, and GrainCorp, who donated the silos as canvases. Visiting the Sheep Hills Silo Art offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of art in an unexpected setting and to learn about the culture and history of the local Indigenous community. The surrounding landscape enhances the experience, offering panoramic views, especially stunning at sunrise and sunset.
