Discover more about National Gallery of Victoria

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) stands as a beacon of art and culture in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1861, it is not only the oldest but also the most visited art museum in the country. The NGV comprises two magnificent galleries: NGV International on St Kilda Road and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square. NGV International, housed in an iconic bluestone building designed by Sir Roy Grounds, showcases the gallery's extensive international art collection. Opened in 1968, the building itself is a work of art, featuring a stunning Leonard French stained-glass ceiling in the Great Hall and a mesmerizing water-wall entrance. The redevelopment by Mario Bellini in 2003 created new galleries while preserving the building's original character. The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, located at Federation Square, is dedicated to Australian art, including works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Together, the two galleries hold over 76,000 works of art, representing diverse periods, styles, and cultures. From European masters to Asian treasures and contemporary installations, the NGV offers an extraordinary visual arts experience. The majority of the collection has been generously gifted to the NGV by members of the community. The NGV also hosts a diverse range of temporary exhibitions, programs, and events, including talks, tours, films, and performances. With free general entry, the NGV warmly welcomes everyone to share in its riches and explore the world of art.
