Discover more about Böhmertor

The Böhmertor, a protected historical landmark, stands as a testament to Freistadt's medieval heritage. Originally called Spitalstor (Hospital Gate) because of its proximity to a hospital, and later Frauentor (Women's Gate), it eventually took its current name from the road leading to Bohemia. Constructed in the 13th century, the Böhmertor is one of the oldest parts of Freistadt's fortifications. Over the centuries, the Böhmertor has been altered and rebuilt. In 1485, the same master builder who worked on the Linzertor, Mathes Klayndl, renovated it. The gate saw heavy damage in an 1880 fire that destroyed its wooden structures. The fire led to the demolition of the inner city wall and the gate's upper story. While it wasn't fully reconstructed, one story was rebuilt in 2011. Today, the Böhmertor features a Gothic pointed arch and the city's coat of arms. Visible are the slots for the drawbridge and embrasures, offering a glimpse into its defensive past. Visitors can explore the area surrounding the gate, with its charming streets and local shops. The Liebfrauenkirche, a small 15th-century church, stands nearby.
