Discover more about Kumpfmühle

Kumpfmühle, nestled in the wild and romantic Feldaist valley in Hagenberg im Mühlkreis, is a captivating museum that brings the history of milling to life. The site has historical significance with milling workshops dating back to the 11th or 12th century. The Kumpfmühle was once part of the Schwertberg estate and was overseen by the Pregarten millers' guild. Over the centuries, the mill had many owners; the first known miller, Andre Kumpfmüller, also operated a fulling mill in 1563. In 1831, the Kumpfmühle had four grinding gears and a sawing machine. A fire in 1908 destroyed the building, but it was rebuilt. Operations ceased in 1951 due to declining customer numbers. The striking water wheel is a reminder of when local farmers ground their grain and sawed their timber into planks. After a long period of dormancy, Friedrich Robeischl and his family lovingly restored the mill. Today, visitors can explore exhibits detailing traditional milling techniques, local flora and fauna, and the Mühlkreis region's history. Knowledgeable guides share insights into the methods and machinery that once powered local economies. The museum also features walking trails, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the landscapes of Upper Austria.
