Discover more about Tischofer Cave

Tischofer Cave, or Tischofer Höhle in German, is nestled in the Kaisertal valley within the Kaisergebirge mountains near Kufstein, Austria. This 40-meter-long cave with an 8.5-meter-high entrance has served as a significant site throughout history, blending natural geological formations with human stories. The cave's history stretches back to the Paleolithic era, evidenced by the skeletal remains of cave bears and other predators who sought shelter within its walls. Archaeological excavations have unearthed bone tools crafted by paleo-human inhabitants from cave bear remains, dating back approximately 27,000 to 28,000 years, marking it as the oldest known site of human occupation in Tyrol. These artifacts are now displayed in the Kufstein Fortress museum.During the Bronze Age, the cave served as a copper smithy and foundry, with discoveries of human skeletons and associated tools. In more recent times, it acted as a gathering place and weapons cache during the Tyrolean Rebellion in the Napoleonic Wars. The cave's name is believed to have originated during this period, derived from the local dialect term "Tisch oba" (up to the desk), referring to a desk used in the cave as a strategic hideout.Today, visitors can explore the cave via the Kaiser Path (Kaiseraufstieg) in the Kaisertal valley, a pathway secured with cable railings. While the cave itself is relatively small, its historical and paleontological significance, combined with the natural beauty of the surrounding Kaisertal valley, makes it a worthwhile destination.
