Discover more about Mönchsberg Elevator

The Mönchsberg Elevator, or MönchsbergAufzug, provides a rapid ascent from the heart of Salzburg to the summit of Mönchsberg, a 508-meter mountain that flanks the city's historic center. In just 30 seconds, this modern elevator whisks passengers 60 meters up through the mountain's interior to an elevation of 485 meters.Originally conceived in the late 19th century by private banker Karl Leitner, the elevator was initially powered by batteries and designed to transport tourists to the hills above Salzburg. The first Mönchsbergaufzug, opened in 1890, was considered the highest lift in Europe at the time. The lift has been modernized several times since its original construction.Today, the elevator delivers visitors to a terrace offering unparalleled views of Salzburg's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the top, you'll find the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Restaurant M32, and walking paths through a nature reserve. The Mönchsberg is popular with locals and tourists alike, offering a peaceful escape with spectacular views of Salzburg Cathedral, Getreidegasse, and the surrounding mountains.
