Discover more about Residenzplatz

Residenzplatz, a stately square in the heart of Salzburg's Altstadt, showcases the city's Baroque splendor. Originally named Hauptplatz, it was later renamed after the Alte Residenz (Old Residence). The square is bound by significant landmarks: the Salzburg Cathedral to the south, the Alte Residenz to the west, and the Neue Residenz to the east. Imposing burgher houses form the northern boundary. Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau initiated the square's construction in the late 16th century as part of his vision to transform Salzburg into a Baroque city. This involved demolishing 55 burgher houses and the old cathedral cemetery. The Residenzbrunnen, a large Baroque fountain designed in the 17th century, stands as the square's centerpiece and is considered the largest of its kind outside of Italy. Throughout the year, Residenzplatz hosts various events, including concerts and the annual Christkindlmarkt. During the Christmas Market, the square transforms into a festive wonderland with traditional stalls, choral performances, and wind instrument ensembles. In the warmer months, open-air concerts have featured renowned artists.
