Discover more about Stiftskirche St. Peter

Stiftskirche St. Peter, located in the heart of Salzburg's historic Sankt-Peter-Bezirk, stands as a testament to the city's enduring spiritual and artistic heritage. Founded in A.D. 696 by St. Rupert, it serves as the church of St. Peter's Abbey, the oldest continuously active monastery in the German-speaking world. Originally a Romanesque basilica, the church underwent a significant transformation in the 17th and 18th centuries, embracing the elegant Baroque style that defines its current appearance. The west door, dating back to 1240, offers a glimpse into the church's earlier Romanesque past. Inside, visitors are greeted by a serene atmosphere adorned with intricate frescoes, ornate altars, and a magnificent organ. The church is home to numerous art treasures, including altar paintings by Kremser Schmidt and the Salzburg Madonna from the early 15th century. The Salzburg Madonna is in the left chancel. The abbey was built between 1125 and 1147 and is the only high Romanesque basilica remaining in Salzburg. In the 17th century it was given a Baroque character by the building of the choir house, the dome and chapel buildings, and the present-day interior design largely dates back to the 18th century. Stiftskirche St. Peter is not only a place of worship but also a venue for cultural events, hosting art exhibitions and concerts that showcase the church's exceptional acoustics. Mozart's Mass in C minor is performed here every year during the Salzburg Festival. The surrounding St. Peter's Cemetery and catacombs add another layer of historical intrigue, with notable figures buried within its grounds.
