Discover more about St. Peter's Abbey

St. Peter's Abbey, or St Peter's Archabbey, stands as a testament to Salzburg's rich history and enduring faith. Founded in 696 by Saint Rupert, it is considered the oldest monastery in the German-speaking area with a continuous history. The abbey served as a base for missionary efforts in the Eastern Alps and, until 987, the abbot also held the position of Archbishop of Salzburg. The abbey's architecture reflects various periods, with its Romanesque church dating back to around 1130. The interior was later remodeled in the Rococo style between 1760 and 1782. Visitors can explore the abbey church, admire the high altar by Martin Johann Schmidt, and discover the St. Mary's Chapel, which houses the grave of Abbot Johann von Staupitz. Adjacent to the abbey is St. Peter's Cemetery, one of the most beautiful and oldest cemeteries in the world. It features elaborate funerary monuments, crypts, and the late-Gothic St Margaret's Chapel. Carved into the cliffs of the Festungsberg are the catacombs, believed to have been early Christian gathering places. The cemetery and catacombs gained international recognition as filming locations in 'The Sound of Music'. St. Peter's also holds cultural significance, having been associated with Mozart and Haydn. The abbey's Romanesque Hall and the Baroque Hall of St. Peter Stiftskulinarium host concerts and events, including Mozart Dinner Concerts. The Stiftskulinarium itself is one of the oldest restaurants in Europe, with mentions dating back to 803.
