Discover more about Kapitelschwemme

Kapitelplatz, in the heart of Salzburg, is home to the Kapitelschwemme, a Baroque fountain dating back to the 17th century. Originally a horse well, it provided a watering place for the horses of archbishops and travelers. In 1732, Prince Archbishop Firmian commissioned a new design, resulting in the elaborate Baroque structure seen today. The fountain features a statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, mounted on a seahorse. He holds a trident and wears a crown, symbolizing his dominion over water. Flanking Neptune are two Triton figures blowing conch shells, which predate the rest of the artwork, having been created in 1690. The fountain's design is reminiscent of Rome's Trevi Fountain, leading some tourists to toss coins into the well.Kapitelplatz itself is a spacious square surrounded by historical buildings, including the Salzburg Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace, and St Peter's Abbey. The square provides stunning views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Today, Kapitelplatz hosts various events, including open-air markets and cultural performances.
