The tower was constructed to protect the Hallstatt salt mines. The mines have been in operation for over 7,000 years and gave their name to the Hallstatt culture, an archaeological culture linked to the early Celts. Visitors can combine their Skywalk visit with a tour of the Salzwelten Hallstatt, the world's oldest salt mine. The entrance is a short walk from the Skywalk and Rudolfsturm. The salt mine tour includes a ride on a miner's train, wooden slides, and a visit to the oldest wooden staircase in Europe.
