Discover more about Ledererturm

The Ledererturm, first documented in 1326, stands as the last vestige of Wels' medieval fortifications. Its name, meaning Leatherer's Tower, is derived from the leather workers who inhabited the area during the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the tower has been renovated and adapted, yet it retains its medieval charm.Originally, the Ledererturm was crowned with an onion dome, but this was replaced with a tented roof after a devastating fire in 1771. In 1892, a mechanical clock was installed, adding to its allure. The tower narrowly escaped demolition in the early 20th century due to public protests.Today, the Ledererturm is a central part of the Wels Christmas World, transforming into the Christ Child's "Heavenly Cloud Kingdom" from mid-November to late December. During this time, visitors can explore a museum of historical toys and send Christmas greetings with a special stamp. Although the tower lacks heating, toilets and disabled access, it remains a significant landmark.
