Getting There

  • Walking

    Marktbrunnen is centrally located in Universitätsplatz, within Salzburg's Old Town. From Mozart's Birthplace on Getreidegasse, walk straight until you reach Universitätsplatz. Turn right, and you'll find Marktbrunnen in the center of the square. From the Salzburg Cathedral (Dom zu Salzburg), walk southeast on Domplatz toward Kapitelplatz, continue straight onto Kapitelplatz, and then turn left onto Universitätsstraße. Walk straight for about 5 minutes, and you will see Universitätsplatz on your right.

  • Public Transport

    From Salzburg's main train station (Hauptbahnhof), take bus number 2 or 8 toward 'Salzburg, St. Julian' or 'Salzburg, Aigen' respectively. Get off at the 'Universität' stop. Walk straight for about 5 minutes toward Universitätsplatz, which will be on your right. A single ticket costs €2.50 if purchased from a vending machine or online, or €3.00 if purchased on board. Make sure to validate your ticket before travel to avoid a fine of €85.

  • Parking

    If driving, several parking garages are near Universitätsplatz, including Altstadtgarage. From the A1 motorway, take exit 297-Salzburg-West toward B150, merge onto B150, and follow signs for Salzburg Zentrum. Altstadtgarage is a short walk to Universitätsplatz. Parking costs around €1.50 per hour. The Altstadtgarage has 1300 parking spaces and is open 24/7. The shops and restaurants in the old town, around Getreidegasse and the Grünmarkt on Universitätsplatz, can be reached directly via the garage exits.

Located in the heart of Universitätsplatz, the Marktbrunnen is more than just a fountain; it's a symbol of Salzburg's historical significance and architectural beauty. This baroque-style fountain, with its intricate sculptures, draws locals and tourists alike.The fountain dates back to the 18th century, showcasing the artistic flair of the time. The Universitätsplatz provides an impressive backdrop of historical buildings. The square often hosts events and gatherings, adding to the lively ambiance.Originally, a simple well stood on Alter Markt (Old Market). In 1488, it was replaced by a more sophisticated one that drew water from Gaisberg mountain. The oldest part of the current fountain is the metal fence made in 1583 by Wolf Guppenberger, a blacksmith. His skill is also evident in the guild sign at Getreidegasse 33. The fence features horseback riders, animals, plants, and coats of arms. The central pillar dates back to 1687 and displays the city's coat of arms. The large, octagonal marble basin was added around 1685-87. The statue of St. Florian, the protector against fire, was created by Josef Anton Pfaffinger in 1734.Whether you're enjoying a coffee at a nearby café or taking a leisurely stroll, the Marktbrunnen is a must-see.
