Discover more about Mönchsberg Elevator

The Mönchsberg Elevator, or MönchsbergAufzug, provides a rapid and effortless ascent from the heart of Salzburg's Old Town (Altstadt) to the summit of the Mönchsberg. In a mere 30 seconds, this modern elevator whisks passengers 60 meters (197 feet) up through the mountain's interior to an elevation of 485 m. Originally conceived in the late 19th century by private banker Karl Leitner, the elevator was initially powered by electricity from Salzburg's first electric power plant. The first Mönchsbergaufzug was opened in 1890 and was the highest lift in Europe at the time. The lift quickly became a major tourist attraction, transporting up to 12 people at a time. A tunnel was constructed for the lift in 1947 when the Café Winkler was rebuilt. The lift was modernized again in 1987. Upon exiting the elevator, visitors find themselves at the entrance to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, a renowned institution showcasing international modern and contemporary art. A scenic terrace offers magical views of Salzburg's Old Town. The restaurant M32 is also located in the same building. Numerous pathways lead through the nature sanctuary on top of the Mönchsberg, from where you can enjoy unique views across the historic rooftops of Salzburg's Old Town. The Mönchsberg itself is one of five mountains in the city of Salzburg, flanking the western side of Salzburg's historic city center. It is named after the Benedictine monks of St Peter's Abbey at the northern foot of the mountain. Fortifications have existed on the Mönchsberg since the 13th century.
