Discover more about Landeszeughaus

The Landeszeughaus, or Styrian Armoury, is a remarkable historical treasure located in the heart of Graz, Austria. Constructed between 1642 and 1647, this immense arsenal was once the central weapons depot for the region of Styria. Its primary purpose was to equip the Styrian forces in their defense against the Ottoman Empire and Hungarian rebels. Inside, you'll discover an astounding collection of approximately 32,000 items. This includes a vast array of weaponry, armor, and tools, offering a comprehensive look at military technology and craftsmanship from the 15th to 18th centuries. Exhibits range from heavy cannons and muskets to ornate pistols and complete suits of armor, including rare horse armor. The armoury's significance diminished after the establishment of a stable border with the Ottoman Empire in 1699. Although Empress Maria Theresa intended to close it in the 18th century, the Styrian Estates successfully argued for its preservation as a symbol of their historical struggles. In 1892, it became part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, solidifying its status as a museum. The collection was safely relocated during World War II and reopened to the public in 1946. A visit to the Landeszeughaus offers a unique glimpse into the military history of Styria and the broader Habsburg Empire. The sheer scale of the collection and the authentic setting create an immersive experience for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
