Discover more about Keltenmuseum

The Keltenmuseum Hallein is one of Europe's most significant museums dedicated to Celtic history and art. It offers a comprehensive look into the culture of the Celts, the prehistory of the Salzburg region, and the history of the town of Hallein. The museum's collection is largely based on discoveries made in the area surrounding the Hallein Salt Mine (Salzbergwerk Dürrnberg). The museum's exhibits feature a wide array of artifacts, including tools, jewelry, weapons, and pottery, providing a detailed look into Celtic daily life and cultural practices. A highlight is the 2,500-year-old Celtic beaked flagon (Schnabelkanne) from Dürrnberg, adorned with mythical creatures. Visitors can also explore walk-in mining galleries and burial chambers. Additionally, the museum displays three archiepiscopal royal rooms dating back to 1756/57, along with objects related to Hallein's history and salt production. The museum itself has a rich history, founded in 1882 and moving to its current location in the former Salt Offices in 1970. Since 2012, the Keltenmuseum Hallein has been a part of the Salzburg Museum. The Keltenmuseum Hallein also includes the Silent Night Museum Hallein, located in the former home of Franz Xaver Gruber, composer of the famous Christmas carol.
