The Stille Nacht Museum Hallein offers a unique and immersive journey into the history of the world's most beloved Christmas carol, “Silent Night”. Located in the charming town of Hallein, Austria, just a short distance from Salzburg, the museum is housed in the former sacristan and choirmaster's house where Franz Xaver Gruber, the composer of the carol's melody, lived and worked for 28 years. Stepping inside the museum is like stepping back in time. The rooms are filled with original manuscripts, historical documents, personal artifacts, and interactive exhibits that bring Gruber's life and the story of “Silent Night” to life. The exhibition focuses not only on the history of the creation and distribution of “Silent Night! Holy Night!” but also on the living conditions of the Gruber family. Franz Xaver Gruber worked in Hallein from 1835 until his death in 1863. The museum stands directly opposite the Hallein parish church, where Gruber performed his composition on the organ. Gruber’s grave is located just outside the museum. A memorial plaque commemorates his musical achievements. Every year on December 24th, the 'Singing at the Gruber Grave' event is held, a highlight of Christmastime in Hallein. The barrier-free museum is located in the former sexton and choirmaster's house. The museum also focuses on the genesis and dissemination history of “Silent Night! Holy Night!”.
