The gardens were initially commissioned in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau as a place of pleasure for him and his mistress, Salome Alt, and their 15 children. Originally named Schloss Altenau, the palace and gardens were later renamed Mirabell by Archbishop Markus Sittikus.The geometrically arranged gardens, reshaped around 1690 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, feature mythology-themed statues dating from 1730 and sculptures by Ottavio Mosto from 1690, representing the four elements: fire, air, earth, and water. Noteworthy features include the Grand Parterre, the Pegasus Fountain, the Hedge Theater, and the Dwarf Garden, the oldest of its kind in Europe. The Marble Hall within Mirabell Palace, once the prince-archbishop's banqueting hall, is now a sought-after wedding venue and concert hall, where the Mozart family once performed.Today, the gardens are open to the public and provide barrier-free access, making them a popular retreat for locals and tourists alike. The gardens offer a unique view toward the Cathedral and Fortress, incorporating it into the historic townscape.
