Discover more about Lainzer Tiergarten

Lainzer Tiergarten, a vast 2,450-hectare (6,054-acre) wildlife preserve, lies on the western edge of Vienna, offering a unique blend of nature and history. Established in 1561 by Emperor Ferdinand I as a private hunting ground for the Habsburg dynasty, it has been open to the public since 1919. The name combines the Lainz district with 'Tiergarten,' meaning 'animal garden'. Initially enclosed by a wooden fence, replaced by a stone wall in 1781, the Lainzer Tiergarten served as an exclusive domain for the aristocracy for centuries. After the Austro-Hungarian Empire fell, it became a public nature preserve. Today, visitors can explore woodlands, meadows, and hills, encountering wild boars, red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, and mouflons. The Hermesvilla, built in 1886 by Emperor Franz Joseph I for Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), is a highlight. This villa, a secluded retreat for the imperial couple, now houses a museum showcasing its history and the lives of its former residents. The Lainzer Tiergarten offers various leisure activities, including hiking, running, and walking. Six children's playgrounds are located near the gates. Visitors can also find viewing points, picnic areas, and restaurants such as Rohrhaus, Hirschgstemm and the Café-Restaurant Hermesvilla. The Lainzer Tor, the main gate, features a visitor center with information about the park's history, flora, and fauna.
