Schloss Vogelsang: A Neo-Gothic Gem in Steyr

Schloss Vogelsang, also sometimes spelled Voglsang, is a captivating villa in Steyr, Austria, showcasing neo-Gothic architecture. Completed in 1882, it was commissioned by the prominent industrialist Josef Werndl, who envisioned it as a residence reminiscent of a Scottish castle. Interestingly, despite its grandeur, Werndl never actually lived in the Schloss. The villa's design, attributed to architect Anton Plochberger, features distinctive corner towers, crenellations, and intricate detailing that lend it a castle-like appearance. The facades are elaborately designed, and a glass-house-like structure in the middle of the roof provides light to the stairwell. While much of the original interior has been lost over time, remnants of the wall and ceiling designs can still be seen on the ground floor and parts of the first floor. Throughout its history, Schloss Vogelsang has served various purposes. It was used as an exhibition hall, and later, Werndl's daughter, Baroness Caroline Imhof, lived there. In 1928, the Tyrolese Franciscan Order acquired the building and established a boarding school for boys. More recently, it was converted into privately owned apartments. Today, Schloss Vogelsang stands as a protected monument, its yellow facade and unique architecture drawing visitors to admire it from the outside. Although the interiors are not generally accessible, the surrounding park offers a pleasant space for a stroll and provides stunning views of the castle.
