Schnallentor: A Symbol of Steyr's Resilience

The Schnallentor, or Schnalle Gate, is a captivating historical landmark located in Steyr, Austria. Constructed in the first half of the 16th century, it formed part of the city's defenses, situated between Steyrdorf and Tabor. The gate's name, derived from an old coin called "Schnalle," hints at its original function as a toll collection point for those entering the city with carts. The gate's architecture features sgraffito decorations dating back to 1613, reminiscent of those found on the Innerberger Stadl. Although equipped with loopholes in its upper story, the Schnallentor likely held limited strategic importance. Despite proposals for its demolition in the late 19th century following the dismantling of the city walls, the Schnallentor was saved due to its historical significance and the presence of apartments within it. Over the years, the Schnallentor has undergone several renovations, including a comprehensive restoration in 1894 and further work in 1952, 2017 and 2018. Today, visitors can admire this well-preserved gate and explore the charming area surrounding it, including cobblestone streets, quaint shops, and other historical buildings. The best time to visit is during the warmer months when the gardens are in bloom.
