The Alter Dom, or Old Cathedral, stands as a prominent landmark in Linz, showcasing the splendor of Baroque architecture. Constructed between 1669 and 1683 by the Jesuit order, it was originally dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola. The design is attributed to Pietro Francesco Carlone.Following the dissolution of the Jesuit Order in 1773, the church stood vacant for a time. However, in 1785, it was designated as the cathedral of the newly formed Diocese of Linz, a role it fulfilled until 1909. During this period, it became known as the Alter Dom to distinguish it from the New Cathedral (Mariendom). The exterior is characterized by its twin towers, capped with distinctive onion domes. The interior is a lavish display of Baroque artistry. Pink marble columns, ornate stuccowork, and gilded details create a visually rich space. The high altar, crafted by Giovanni Battista Barberino and Giovanni Battista Colombo, is a masterpiece of marble sculpture. The altar painting, depicting Saint Aloysius, is the work of Antonio Bellucci. The carved choir stalls, transferred from Garsten Abbey, feature intricate details and grotesque figures. From 1856 to 1868, Anton Bruckner, the celebrated Austrian composer, served as the cathedral's organist. During his tenure, he adapted the organ to suit his musical vision. The Bruckner organ remains in its original state. The Alter Dom also has a connection to Adolf Hitler, who was confirmed in the church as a teenager. Today, the Alter Dom stands as a symbol of Linz's rich history, artistic heritage, and religious traditions.
