Discover more about Residenzbrunnen

The Residenzbrunnen, or Residence Fountain, stands as an exquisite historical landmark in the heart of Salzburg, gracing the Residenzplatz. Surrounded by the opulent architecture of the Salzburg Residenz, once home to the Prince-Archbishops, the fountain serves as a captivating centerpiece. Constructed in the early 17th century (1656-1661), this magnificent fountain is celebrated for its intricate baroque design, featuring elaborate sculptures depicting figures from mythology and the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Standing approximately 13 meters tall, the Residenzbrunnen is one of Austria's largest fountains. Its design, attributed to Tommaso di Garona, showcases four snorting horses emerging from a spouting rock. Giants rooted in the rock carry the lower basin, where three dolphins balance the scalloped upper basin. Atop it all, a Triton figure blows water into the air from a conch-shell trumpet. The Residenzplatz itself has origins tracing back to the late 16th century when Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau sought to transform Salzburg into a 'Rome of the North'. To create this grand public space, 55 medieval buildings were demolished. The square has served as a venue for significant events, including rock concerts and film appearances such as in 'The Sound of Music'. Today, Residenzplatz continues to host various cultural events, including open-air cinemas, fairs, and Christmas markets. Originally, the fountain was intended to draw water from the Fürstenbrunner spring on the Untersberg. However, it now connects to Salzburg's main water supply network, primarily sourced from the deep well near St. Leonhard. The Residenzbrunnen is more than just a visual delight; it reflects Salzburg's artistic and cultural achievements during the Baroque period, offering a glimpse into the city's rich history and its role as a center of art and music.
