Discover more about Festungsmuseum Heldsberg

The Festungsmuseum Heldsberg, nestled between St. Margrethen and Au in the Rhine Valley, provides a fascinating journey into Switzerland's military past. Constructed between 1938 and 1941, this former artillery fortress was a key component of the border fortifications in the Rhine Valley. Its strategic location allowed it to control the southern end of Lake Constance and the Rhine crossings as far south as Montlingen. Originally armed with four 7.5 cm fortress guns and multiple machine guns, the fortress was designed to prevent any crossing of the Rhine River and Lake Constance. The German High Command recognized the fortress's strength, leading them to avoid it in their attack plans. Today, the museum offers visitors the chance to explore the underground tunnels, casemates, and artillery emplacements, gaining insight into the lives of the soldiers who served there. The museum's collection includes a variety of military artifacts, such as weapons, uniforms, and equipment. Exhibits detail the history of the fortress, its role in Swiss defense strategy, and the challenges faced by the soldiers stationed there. The Festungsmuseum Heldsberg also incorporates the underground command bunker of Border Brigade 8 in Haslen, featuring over 30 rooms dedicated to the Cold War period. Visitors can also relax and enjoy refreshments at the Heldsbergstube and the "Kästlis" Haslen soldiers' bar.
