Kloster Und: A Monastery Transformed

Kloster Und, originally known as Kapuzinerkloster Und, is located in Krems an der Donau, Austria, and offers a captivating blend of history, architecture, and modern cultural experiences. Founded in the early 17th century during the Counter-Reformation, Emperor Matthias granted permission in 1612 for the Capuchins to construct a monastery between Krems and Stein. Mathias Piazolli designed the structure, which became a center of spiritual life and pilgrimage, completed in 1614.The monastery's name, 'Und,' is believed to derive from the Latin 'Sancta Maria ad undas,' meaning Holy Mary by the waves, reflecting its proximity to the Danube River. The monastery experienced a tumultuous history, including partial destruction by fire in 1656, after which Domenico Sciassia reconstructed the church, consecrated in 1659. The church housed a revered statue of the Virgin Mary, drawing pilgrims to the Chapel of Grace, built by Pietro Maino Maderno following reported miraculous healings in 1643. However, in 1796, the monastery was closed under Josef II.Today, Kloster Und serves as a dynamic events center, restaurant, and wine college, revitalizing its historic walls. Visitors can admire architectural marvels, including frescoes by Daniel Gran, and explore modern amenities. The grand altar, crafted from black marble, was relocated to the Kremser Stadtpfarrkirche. The building now hosts various events, blending its historical roots with contemporary cultural functions.
