Overview
The Steinertor, the symbol of Krems an der Donau, stands as a majestic reminder of the city's rich history and strategic importance in the Wachau Valley. Originally built in the late 15th century around 1480, it was part of the city's fortifications, protecting it from invaders. In 1756, during the reign of Maria Theresa, the gate was remodeled in the Baroque style, adding ornate details and graceful lines to its medieval structure. The gate features two large, round-arched gates adorned with carvings depicting scenes from history. Above the gates, statues of Saint John Nepomuk and Leopold III are displayed. Stepping through the Steinertor is like stepping back in time. The cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and quaint shops offer a glimpse into Krems' past. Today, the Steinertor stands at the beginning of the Obere Landstrasse, Krems' main shopping street, inviting visitors to explore the city's heritage.
