Walking

Gozzoburg is located in the historic center of Krems, making it easily accessible on foot. From Steiner Tor, the main gate to the Old Town, walk along the main street, Obere Landstraße, towards the Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square). Continue straight ahead to Hoher Markt. Gozzoburg will be on your left. The walk is approximately 5-10 minutes. No costs involved.

From Krems train station, take bus line 1 or 2 towards the city center. Get off at the 'Krems, Hoher Markt' stop, which is a short walk to Gozzoburg at Hoher Markt 11. A single bus ticket costs around €2.20.

Located in the heart of Krems an der Donau, the Gozzoburg is a significant historical landmark and one of Europe's most important medieval architectural treasures. Constructed in the mid-13th century by Burggrave Kuenring Götz, it was originally designed as a residential palace rather than a fortification, quickly becoming known for its grandeur.The Gozzoburg showcases a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, reflecting modifications over the centuries. A highlight is 'The Heavenly Court,' featuring some of Europe's oldest preserved secular fresco cycles, dating back to around 1330 AD. These vibrant murals depict scenes from Christ's life, along with saints, apostles, and angels. The castle also boasts a Gothic chapel dedicated to St. Catherine, known for its ribbed vaulting and stained-glass windows.Today, the Gozzoburg houses part of the Danube University Krems and hosts various events, including concerts and lectures. It received the Europa Nostra Prize in 2007 for its exemplary renovation work, which restored its original grandeur while incorporating modern amenities. Guided tours are available, providing insights into the castle's history and significance.
