Discover more about Ysperklamm - wildes Wasser, wilder Wald

The Ysperklamm, a natural monument since 1952, is a breathtaking testament to the power of water and time. Located in the southern Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, this gorge has been sculpted over millennia by the Ysper River, which originates in the Weinsberg Forest. The result is a dramatic landscape of cascading waterfalls, moss-covered granite boulders, and narrow ravines that beckon hikers and nature enthusiasts alike. The Ysper River plunges almost 300 meters in height through the gorge, creating a series of impressive waterfalls that are particularly spectacular after rainfall. The sound of the rushing water and the sight of the water carving its way through the stone create an immersive sensory experience. The trails within the Ysperklamm have been carefully designed to allow visitors to safely explore the gorge and witness its beauty up close. Bridges, stairs, and wooden walkways have been constructed to provide access to the most scenic spots, while also protecting the delicate ecosystem. The main trail through the gorge takes approximately one hour to ascend, leading past numerous waterfalls and through characteristically narrow ravines. For those seeking a longer hike, the Ysperklamm can be combined with the Druidenweg (Druid Trail), a themed nature trail that explores the Celtic history of the region. The Druidenweg leads past unique stone formations and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Historically, the Ysper River was used for timber floating, with logs being transported down the river to the Danube. Remnants of embankment protection structures can still be seen within the Ysperklamm, serving as a reminder of this past industry. The Ödteich, a pond formerly used to collect water for the timber floating, is located at the top of the gorge. Today, the area is a spruce forest, offering a tranquil contrast to the rushing water below. The Ysperklamm is open year-round, offering a different experience depending on the season. In the spring, the melting snow creates particularly powerful waterfalls. The summer months offer a refreshing escape from the heat. In the autumn, the surrounding forests explode with color, creating a stunning backdrop for a hike through the gorge. Even in winter, the Ysperklamm has its own unique charm, with frozen waterfalls and snow-covered rocks creating a magical landscape.
