Naturpark Blockheide-Eibenstein: A Geological Wonderland

Naturpark Blockheide-Eibenstein, nestled near the historic town of Gmünd in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, showcases nature's power over time. This protected area spans approximately 130 hectares, featuring heathland, mixed forests, meadows, and remarkable granite formations. The park's geological significance lies in its massive granite blocks, remnants of ancient geological processes. These bizarrely shaped blocks create a captivating environment, with the 'Wackelsteine' (rocking stones) being particularly famous. These large granite boulders are balanced so delicately that visitors can rock them with a bit of force. The Naturpark was officially established in 1964 to preserve the unique landscape. Today, it's part of the Natura 2000 network, ensuring the long-term protection of its valuable habitats and species. Visitors can explore themed hiking trails like the GRANIT-Tour, MYTHOlogie-Tour, LANDSCHAFTSkul-Tour, and MARIENKÄFERWEG (Ladybug Trail). The 30-meter observation tower offers panoramic views, and the Schutzhaus Blockheide inn provides local cuisine. Other attractions include the Blockheide pond, a meridian path, a geological open-air museum, and a nature playground.
