SONNENWELT Großschönau, nestled in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, offers an immersive experience exploring the history of energy and its impact on human civilization. More than just a museum, it combines education, entertainment, and hands-on activities to create a memorable visit for all ages. The adventure begins with a film that sets the stage for themes of sustainability and climate protection. Visitors then embark on a self-guided tour through 12 'time zones,' each representing a different era in human history and our relationship with energy. Exhibits are interactive, encouraging visitors to touch, explore, and learn through play. Starting with 'Von Sonne und Erde' (From Sun and Earth), the first zone explores the interplay between the sun, atmosphere, and our planet. Zones like 'Nester bauen' (Building Nests) showcase the energy-efficient nomadic tents of early humans, while 'Sesshaft werden' (Becoming Settled) delves into the transition to settled communities and new energy sources. As visitors progress, they encounter the ingenuity of ancient civilizations, like the Romans' sophisticated technologies for harnessing energy. The journey continues through the Middle Ages, rural life, and even a 'Salon mit Gaslicht' showcasing life around 1900. Visitors can also explore a special exhibition called 'The Powerchanger' which delves into the world of renewable electricity. The museum also features a large Energy-Experience-Playground dedicated to the four elements: fire, water, earth, and air. Here, you can find the 1st stone labyrinth in the Waldviertel region. SONNENWELT is committed to accessibility, offering wheelchair access, a wheelchair-friendly car park and barrier-free access to toilets. Strollers are welcome, and family parking spaces are available.
