Discover more about Waldviertler Schmalspurbahnverein

The Waldviertler Schmalspurbahnverein (WSV), based in Heidenreichstein, is dedicated to preserving and operating the historic narrow-gauge railway between Alt Nagelberg and Heidenreichstein. Founded in 1987, the WSV emerged from a group of railway enthusiasts determined to maintain rail traffic on the Waldviertel narrow-gauge lines after the discontinuation of scheduled passenger service by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). The WSV leases the Alt Nagelberg–Heidenreichstein section from ÖBB and is responsible for its upkeep, including track maintenance and vegetation control. The railway offers a nostalgic journey through the Waldviertel, passing ponds, forests, and the impressive Wackelsteine (balancing rocks). The route connects the glass art village of Alt Nagelberg with the castle town of Heidenreichstein. Special themed trains run throughout the year, offering unique experiences such as the Nikolausfahrt, Waldgeisterzüge, and Schmankerlzug. For railway enthusiasts, special photo trips are available. The WSV also offers the possibility to charter the Wackelstein-Express for private events. The trains are typically operated with historic diesel locomotives from the 2091 series. During the summer season, the trains connect with the Waldviertelbahn, providing travel options to and from Gmünd.
