Passauerturm Travel Guide

The Passauerturm is a distinctive feature of Zwettl's historic cityscape. This semi-circular defense tower, integrated into the city's ancient walls, offers a glimpse into Zwettl's medieval past. The origin of the tower's name remains somewhat mysterious, but it is believed to be connected to the town's long-standing affiliation with the Diocese of Passau.Originally a key component of Zwettl's fortifications, the Passauerturm also served as a prison. In 1814, Caspar Pomeisl, a weaver involved in a robbery, was temporarily imprisoned here. Today, the three-story tower is integrated into a residential building at Schulgasse 14. While the tower is inhabited and not generally open for public tours, its exterior remains a captivating reminder of Zwettl's rich history.Zwettl itself is a charming town in the Waldviertel region, known for its well-preserved town walls and historical landmarks.
