    Getting There

    Walking

    From the village center of Tannheim, follow the well-marked hiking path south towards Vilsalpsee. The walk is approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) and takes about an hour. The path is mostly flat and suitable for all fitness levels. This scenic route passes through meadows and forests, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Note that this is the only option to reach the lake between 8 AM and 5 PM if you do not want to use public transport.

    Public Transport

    From Tannheim Postamt (bus stop in the center of Tannheim), take bus line 121 towards Vilsalpsee. The bus operates regularly during the summer season (May to October). The journey takes approximately 10-15 minutes. A single ride costs around €3-4. The bus drops you off directly at Vilsalpsee.

    Tannheimer Alpenexpress

    The Tannheimer Alpenexpress is a tourist train that runs from Tannheim to Vilsalpsee during the summer and winter seasons. The train departs from a parking near the tourist information office in Tannheim. The ride takes approximately 15 minutes. A round-trip ticket costs around €8-10.

    Driving

    If arriving by car outside the restricted hours (before 8:00 AM or after 5:00 PM), follow the signs from Tannheim towards Vilsalpsee. Be aware that there is a €5 fee payable when exiting the Vilsalpsee area between 5 PM and 8 AM. Parking is available at Vilsalpsee for a fee. Parking costs approximately €1 per hour, with a daily ticket available for €5.

The Vilsalpsee Nature Reserve, now also a Natura 2000 area, encompasses the lake itself, as well as the higher-altitude lakes of Traualpsee, Lache, and Alplsee, and the surrounding mountain landscapes. This protected status ensures the preservation of the area's natural beauty and the habitats of its diverse flora and fauna. The nature reserve is home to over 700 different plant species, including rare orchids and other alpine flowers. The area is also a haven for wildlife, with sightings of Alpine salamanders, European toads, and various bird species. For the great crested grebe, it is the highest located breeding area of Tyrol and only one of three breeding areas in Austria.The lake offers a variety of recreational activities, with hiking being one of the most popular. A relatively easy path without particularly steep inclines circles the lake in about 90 minutes and leads to the impressive Bergaicht waterfall. Fishing is permitted in the lake, with licenses and boats available for rent. To preserve the tranquility and ecological integrity of the Vilsalpsee Nature Reserve, access by private vehicle is restricted during the day. From 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the road to the lake is closed to general traffic, encouraging visitors to arrive by foot, bicycle, bus, or the Tannheimer Alpenexpress, a charming tourist train.
