Discover more about Brunnen am Stadtplatz

The Brunnen am Stadtplatz, more than just a fountain, is the beating heart of Zell am See. Nestled in the center of the town's historic Stadtplatz (town square), this landmark offers visitors a chance to connect with the area's rich past and vibrant present. The fountain's location at Kreuzgasse 4 places it amidst a tapestry of traditional Austrian architecture, bustling shops, and inviting cafes, all framed by the breathtaking backdrop of the Alps. The history of the Brunnen am Stadtplatz is intertwined with the evolution of Zell am See itself. The town, first mentioned in historical records in the 8th century, has long been a vital trading hub. The Stadtplatz, with its triangular shape, has remained a focal point for centuries, although its appearance has changed over time. Originally, a small stream flowed through the square, and a wooden fountain stood alongside a prominent linden tree. These features were captured by landscape painters in the 19th century, providing valuable insights into the square's early appearance. Around 1840, the wooden fountain was replaced by a statue of the Virgin Mary. However, with the introduction of a regulated water supply, the fountain became obsolete and was removed in 1894. The great linden tree had already fallen victim to a storm some 20 years prior, leaving the Stadtplatz somewhat barren at the turn of the century. In 1954, thanks to donations from the local population, a new fountain was erected, becoming the Brunnen am Stadtplatz that visitors admire today. The fountain's design incorporates panels that depict significant moments in Zell am See's history.
