Discover more about Lake Zell

Lake Zell, or Zeller See, is a captivating alpine lake in the Zell am See-Kaprun region of Austria. The lake, named after the town of Zell am See, was formed between 10,000 and 16,000 years ago by glacial excavation. Today, it stands as one of the cleanest lakes in Europe, boasting near-drinking water quality. Measuring approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long and 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) wide, Lake Zell reaches a maximum depth of 73 meters (240 feet). It is surrounded by the majestic Hohe Tauern and Steinernes Meer mountains, creating a picturesque backdrop for a variety of activities. In the summer, the lake comes alive with locals and tourists enjoying swimming, sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat tours. Several lidos (bathing beaches) around the lake provide access to the water and offer amenities such as sunbathing lawns, heated pools, diving towers, and playgrounds. Panorama cruises on the lake offer a unique vantage point of the surrounding mountain scenery. During winter, Lake Zell transforms into a serene, snow-covered landscape. The frozen surface is sometimes used for winter sports, reminiscent of a time when ice harvesting was a major industry in the region. The lake is fed by several small mountain streams and drains into the Salzach River. Motorboats are restricted to preserve water quality, but electric boats and ferries are available.
