Public Transport

From Mayrhofen bus station, take the bus towards Finkenberg. Get off at the 'Finkenberg' stop. Follow the signs to the Penkenbahn or Finkenberger Almbahnen cable car station. Purchase a ticket for the cable car to Penkenjoch. From the top station, follow the walking path to Granatkapelle, about a 10-30 minute hike. Cable car ticket may cost around €30 for a round trip.
Walking

From Finkenberg, head towards the Finkenberger Almbahnen cable car station. You can hike up to the Granatkapelle following the marked trails. The hike is approximately 9 km and will take around 2-3 hours depending on your pace. Ensure you have proper hiking shoes, water, and snacks.
Car

From Mayrhofen, take the B169 road towards Finkenberg. Continue for approximately 5 km until you reach Finkenberg. Turn left onto the road leading up to Penkenberg. Follow this road until you see signs for Granatkapelle. There is a parking area near the Finkenberger Almbahnen. Parking fees may apply.

Perched on the Penkenjoch in the Zillertal Valley, the Granatkapelle (Garnet Chapel) is a striking example of modern architecture harmoniously integrated into the alpine landscape. Designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, the chapel's form is inspired by the garnet crystal, a gemstone historically mined in the region. The chapel serves as both a place of worship and a monument to the area's mining heritage.Construction of the Granatkapelle began in 2013, and it was consecrated later the same year. The chapel is dedicated to Engelbert Kolland, a Franciscan friar from the Zillertal Valley who was martyred in 1860 and canonized in 2024. The chapel's location, at over 2,000 meters above sea level, provides panoramic views of the surrounding Zillertal Alps.The exterior of the chapel is clad in weathering steel, chosen to blend with the rocky environment and develop a natural patina over time. Inside, the space is simple and intimate, lined with local larch wood. Light streams through a glass dome, creating a meditative atmosphere. The altar, crafted from walnut wood by artist Markus Thurner, features garnet inlays, further connecting the chapel to its regional identity. The chapel is open during the summer months and is accessible via the Finkenberger Almbahnen cable car and a short walk.
