Discover more about Kaiserklamm

Kaiserklamm is a picturesque gorge nestled in the Brandenberg Alps of Tyrol, Austria. Located near Brandenberg, about 20 kilometers northeast of Kramsach, this natural wonder was formed over thousands of years by the Brandenberger Ache river. The gorge's name, meaning "Emperor Gorge," originates from visits by Austrian royalty, including Emperor Franz Joseph I and his wife Elisabeth, who enjoyed the area's natural beauty. Historically, the Kaiserklamm played a vital role in the region's timber industry. From the 16th century until 1966, the Brandenberger Ache was used to transport logs downstream to sawmills. The narrow gorge often caused log jams, requiring workers to manually clear them, a spectacle that drew many spectators, including emperors and statesmen. The paths carved into the rock for timber drifting are still accessible today, offering a glimpse into the area's industrial past. Today, the Kaiserklamm is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The well-secured Triftsteig trail leads visitors through the gorge, featuring bridges, rock archways, and tunnels. The 1-kilometer trail showcases the power of the water and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The hike is considered easy, making it suitable for families with children. Safety harnesses for children are available at the Kaiserhaus. Visitors can also enjoy the Kaiserhaus, a 500-year-old inn located near the gorge entrance. This historic guesthouse offers traditional Tyrolean cuisine, including the local delicacy Prugeltorte, and features a playground and petting zoo, making it a perfect spot for a family outing.
