History of Fountain Square

From Suburb to Central Baku

Fountain Square lies within the part of Baku that expanded substantially beyond the medieval walled city during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Oil wealth, new administrative institutions and commercial growth brought streets, apartment buildings and public spaces to the area around the Old City. The square’s setting therefore belongs to the modernising city that developed beside the historic core, rather than to the medieval settlement itself. The Parapet Public Space
