Discover more about Fountains Square

Fountains Square, or Fəvvarələr Meydanı, is Baku's primary gathering spot, drawing locals and tourists alike. Its history dates back to 1868 when the area was designated for military drills and parades, earning it the nickname "Parapet". In pre-Soviet times, it connected Icherisheher (Old City) with Baku's expanding suburbs. Initially, the area was barren due to water shortages and was called the “Dry Garden” or “Fruitless Garden”. In 1899, oil baron Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev financed the Shollar Water Pipeline, which transformed Baku into a green metropolis. The area officially became a park after the pipeline's completion in 1916. In the 1950s, architect I. Tikhomirov redesigned the square, merging it with Nizami Square and adding landscaping. A major upgrade in 1984 introduced decorative fountains, giving the plaza its modern name. In 2010, a comprehensive renovation added paving, restored facades, and introduced bronze sculptures like “Girl on a Bench” and “Girl with an Umbrella”. The square is surrounded by diverse architectural styles, from elegant Belle Époque buildings to modern structures. The nearby Nizami Museum of Literature offers insights into Azerbaijan’s literary heritage. Today, Fountains Square is a vibrant hub with shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. It hosts public festivals, shows, and celebrations. The square is a testament to Baku's blend of tradition and modernity.
