Discover more about Palace of the Shirvanshahs

Nestled in the heart of Baku's Old City, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs stands as a testament to Azerbaijan's rich cultural heritage. Dating back to the 15th century, this architectural marvel was built by the Shirvanshah dynasty after Ibrahim I moved the capital from Shemakha to Baku. The palace served as the royal residence and center of power, symbolizing the dynasty's influence and prosperity. The Palace complex comprises nine key structures, including the main palace building, Divankhana (a pavilion for ceremonies), burial vaults, the Shah's Mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi's Mausoleum, Murad Gate, a reservoir, and the remnants of a bathhouse. The buildings are located in three courtyards on different levels. The two-story palace has about 50 dimensions and outlines connected with three narrow winding staircases. Initially, there were 52 rooms in the palace. Over the centuries, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs has witnessed many historical events, suffering damage from conflicts and invasions. In the mid-15th century, Baku was ruled by the Safavids, and later, the palace came under Turkish possession in 1578. In 1723, the troops of Peter I captured the palace, causing damage to its southern and eastern facades. Despite the plundering and devastation, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs remains a symbol of Azerbaijan's architectural and cultural heritage. Restoration efforts began after the 1917 revolution, and in 1964, the palace was granted museum-reserve status. Today, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs is a museum complex, offering visitors a glimpse into Azerbaijan's royal past.
