Discover more about Muhammad Mosque

The Muhammad Mosque, or Siniggala Mosque, is a significant historical and architectural monument located in the heart of Baku's Old City (Icheri Sheher). Constructed in the 11th century, it holds the distinction of being the earliest Islamic-related building in Azerbaijan, dating back to 1078-1079 AD. The mosque is named after its builder, ustad-rais Muhammad the son of Abu Bakr. The mosque's story is intertwined with Baku's history. In 1723, during the Russo-Persian War, a Russian naval squadron attacked Baku, and a shell struck the mosque's minaret, causing significant damage. The damaged minaret led to the mosque being called 'Siniggala,' meaning 'Damaged Tower' in Azerbaijani. The minaret remained unrepaired until the mid-19th century, symbolizing the city's defiance. The mosque features a simple yet elegant design, typical of early Islamic architecture in the region. The minaret, a cylindrical structure, is a prominent feature, even with its historical damage. Inside, the mosque has a serene atmosphere, with light filtering through stained-glass windows. Archaeological excavations around the mosque have revealed layers of Baku's history, indicating the presence of settlements dating back to ancient times. The mosque has undergone restoration to preserve its historical and cultural value. Today, the Muhammad Mosque stands as a reminder of Baku's rich Islamic heritage and its ability to withstand the test of time. Visitors can explore the mosque and appreciate its architectural and historical significance.
