This 13th-century Armenian Apostolic cathedral boasts a rich history, serving as the most important church in Artsakh for centuries.The name 'Gəncəsər' translates to 'Treasure Mountain' in Armenian, possibly referencing the area's historical silver and metal ore mining or the spiritual and cultural wealth the monastery embodies. Constructed between 1216 and 1238 by Prince Hasan-Jalal Dawla of Khachen, the main church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Its exterior and interior walls showcase meticulously hewn stones, crowned by a high dome with a unique sixteen-sided prism drum.The monastery complex includes a narthex (gavit), added in 1261, featuring a richly decorated portal. Inside, visitors can admire detailed carvings, volumes, and mythological statues.
