Discover more about Nardaran qalası

Nardaran Fortress, or Nardaran Qalası, stands as a proud sentinel on the Absheron Peninsula, approximately 25 kilometers north of Baku. This historical and architectural monument, located in the village of Nardaran, offers a captivating glimpse into Azerbaijan's rich medieval past. Constructed in 1301 by the skilled architect Mahmud ibn Saad, the fortress was strategically positioned to serve as both an observation post and a defensive stronghold for the Shirvanshahs, the rulers of the Shirvan region. The fortress is characterized by its imposing cylindrical tower, constructed from local white stone, which rises to a height of 12 meters. The tower is surrounded by fortified walls, creating a square courtyard that once housed soldiers and served as a safe haven for the local population. The walls, varying in height, are punctuated by four corner towers, each equipped with barriers and arrow slits, further enhancing the fortress's defensive capabilities. Two inscriptions, carved in Arabic script above the entrance to the central tower, provide valuable insights into the fortress's construction and its architect. The larger inscription reveals that the fortress was built in the Hijri year 700 (1301 AD) by Mahmud ibn Saad. He is also credited with designing the Bibi-Heybat Mosque and the Molla Ahmad Mosque. Over the centuries, Nardaran Fortress has undergone several renovations and repairs, reflecting its continued importance as a defensive structure and a symbol of Azerbaijani heritage. In 2001, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, highlighting its need for protection and preservation. Today, the fortress houses an official museum.
