Constructed in 743 AD, during the Umayyad Caliphate, its origins are linked to the spread of Islam in the region. The mosque's construction is attributed to Caliph Khalid ibn Yazid, honoring his brother Muslum ibn Valiahd's arrival in Azerbaijan. Some accounts suggest that the Khazar Khagan embraced Islam within its walls after facing defeat by the Caliphate. Throughout its history, the Jummah Mosque has faced numerous challenges, including earthquakes, invasions, and fires. The city of Shamakhi has been struck by several devastating earthquakes, notably in 1859 and 1902, which caused significant damage to the mosque. It has been rebuilt and restored several times, each time retaining its original structure and architectural elements. Reconstruction efforts were led by prominent architects such as Ziver bey Ahmadbeyov and Josef Kasprowicz Plosko.
