The mosque served as a crucial center for spiritual and communal life.Throughout its history, the Old Mosque has faced numerous challenges, most notably devastating earthquakes that frequently struck the region. Shamakhi, situated in a seismically active zone, has experienced countless tremors, each leaving its mark on the mosque's structure. These reconstructions have not only restored the mosque but also incorporated new architectural elements, reflecting the styles and techniques of different eras. The architecture of the Old Mosque is a testament to the Shirvan-Absheron style, characterized by the use of local limestone, intricate brickwork, and ornate decorative motifs. The mosque's design features a large prayer hall divided into three sections, each with its own mihrab, a niche indicating the direction of Mecca. This unique three-hall layout is a distinctive feature. The central hall is crowned by a large dome, while the other two halls are covered by smaller domes, creating a visually striking and harmonious composition. The facade is adorned with ornamental decor, including geometric patterns, floral motifs, and calligraphic inscriptions. The mosque, like many other religious sites, faced challenges during the Soviet period and was not used for its intended purpose.
