  • Public Transport

    The Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater is accessible via the Baku Metro. Take the metro to '28 May' or 'Sahil' station. From '28 May', it's approximately a 15-minute walk. From 'Sahil' station, it is closer, approximately a 10-minute walk. A single metro fare costs 0.30 AZN and requires a BakiKart, which costs 2 AZN.

  • Walking

    If you are in the city center, such as near Fountain Square, you can walk to the theater. Head northwest on Neftchilar Avenue, then turn right onto Nizami Street. The theater will be on your right. The walk is approximately 15 minutes.

    Taxis are readily available throughout Baku. You can hail a taxi on the street or use ride-hailing apps like Uber or Bolt. A short taxi ride from the city center will cost approximately 3-7 AZN, depending on traffic and distance.

The Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater is a magnificent building with a captivating history. In 1910, a famous Russian opera singer visited Baku and lamented the lack of a suitable opera house in the city. Inspired by her words, the wealthy Daniel Mailov vowed to build a grand theater within a year. The construction of the theater became a matter of prestige when Hacı Zeynalabdin Tağıyev, another prominent millionaire, doubted that it could be completed in such a short time. They made a bet: if Mailov succeeded, Tağıyev would cover all expenses. Designed by architect Nikolai Bayev in a Gothic style, the theater was completed in just ten months and opened on February 28, 1911. Tağıyev honored his word and paid for the construction. In 1918, the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic officially transformed the building into a state theater. Today, the theater is home to four major artistic groups: an opera company, a symphony orchestra, a ballet company, and a choir. It continues to be a leading cultural institution in Baku, showcasing national and classical works.
