Discover more about National Museum of History of Azerbaijan

The National Museum of History of Azerbaijan, located in Baku, is the country's largest museum, offering an extensive collection of artifacts that narrate Azerbaijan's history from antiquity to modernity. The museum is situated in the former residence of Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, a prominent oil magnate and philanthropist, whose mansion was built between 1895 and 1901 by Polish architect Józef Gosławski in the Italian Renaissance style. The museum was founded in 1920 and opened to the public in 1921. Its vast collection includes historical documents, ancient weapons, intricate jewelry, traditional clothing, and exquisite carpets. The exhibits are divided into several sections, including ancient and medieval history, modern history, ethnography, and numismatics. Visitors can explore items from the Stone Age, the Middle Ages, and the era of the khanates, as well as over 150,000 coins and banknotes. The Taghiyev mansion itself is a significant architectural landmark, with its opulent design and historical importance. Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, who lived in the mansion with his family for 18 years, played a crucial role in Azerbaijan's economic and cultural development. In 2007, a memorial museum was established within the National Museum of History to honor Taghiyev's legacy. Visitors can explore the Taghiyev's house-museum, located in nine rooms of the building, to see the furniture and different belongings of Haji Zeynalabdin and his family, as well as get acquainted with the lifestyle of the Taghiyev family.
