Discover more about Alexander Castle

Alexander Castle, locally known as 'Lohar Kuthi' (Iron House) due to its extensive use of iron in construction, is a significant historical landmark in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Built in 1879 by Maharaja Suryakanta Acharya Chowdhury of Muktagacha, it was intended as a rest house for esteemed guests and visiting dignitaries. Some believe the castle was named after N.S. Alexander, the first District Magistrate of Mymensingh, while others suggest it honors Alexandra, the wife of King Edward VII. The two-story building showcases a unique blend of European architectural styles with local materials. It is elevated on a high plinth, a design choice intended to protect it from the frequent flooding of the nearby Brahmaputra River. The facade is adorned with two Greek statues, though their dismembered limbs bear witness to the ravages of time. Inside, the castle once housed fourteen rooms, lavishly furnished with royal furniture, elegant silver statuettes, and exquisite dishware. A sprawling garden surrounded the castle, featuring rare trees, shrubs, and a long artificial lake. The castle has hosted numerous influential figures, including Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who stayed here in 1926, and Mahatma Gandhi. Today, Alexander Castle serves as the library of the Teacher's Training College. While the gardens have faded and the interiors have been altered, the building remains a tangible link to the past and a reminder of Mymensingh's cultural significance.
