Bahadur Shah Park, located in the densely populated Laxmibazar area of Old Dhaka, stands as a testament to the city's rich and turbulent history. Originally known as Victoria Park, it was established in 1858 during British rule. The park's grounds were once the site of the Armenian Club, known as 'Anta Ghar', before being acquired and demolished by the English. The park gained notoriety during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 when several soldiers were publicly hanged from trees on the grounds, causing widespread unease. In 1858, a large crowd gathered to hear the announcement of Queen Victoria's direct rule over India. Following Partition, it was renamed Bahadur Shah Park in honor of the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah II, a symbolic figure in the uprising. A cenotaph was erected in 1957 to honor those who died in the liberation war movement. Today, Bahadur Shah Park offers a serene escape from the bustling city. The park is surrounded by important institutions such as Dhaka Judges Court, various banks, Jagannath University, and Kabi Nazrul College. Visitors can explore the park's architectural displays, including two entrances, a tall monument in memory of the martyred sepoys, the Khawja Hafijullah obelisk, and a star-shaped octagonal fountain.
