Discover more about Jagaddal Vihar

Jagaddal Vihar, also known as Jagaddala Mahavihara, is a significant archaeological site located in the Dhamoirhat Upazila of Naogaon district, Bangladesh. This ancient Buddhist monastery and seat of learning thrived in Varendra, a historical region in present-day North Bengal, during the late 11th and mid-12th centuries. Founded by the later kings of the Pala dynasty, most likely Ramapala (c. 1077-1120), Jagaddal Vihar offers a captivating journey into the region's rich Buddhist heritage. During the Pala dynasty's four centuries of rule in Northeast India (756-1174 AD), numerous monasteries and temples were established. Jagaddala was among the five great Mahaviharas, alongside Vikramashila, Nalanda, Somapura, and Odantapurā. These monasteries formed a network, fostering collaboration and the exchange of scholars. Jagaddala specialized in Vajrayana Buddhism, and many texts later included in the Kanjur and Tengjur were composed or copied here. The Subhāṣitaratnakoṣa, an early anthology of Sanskrit verse, was likely compiled at Jagaddala by Vidyākara. In 1204, Śākyaśribhadra, a Kashmiri scholar and abbot of Nalanda Mahavihara, fled to Tibet from Jagaddala due to Muslim incursions. Historian Sukumar Dutt tentatively placed the final destruction of Jagaddala in 1207, marking the end of its prominence. Excavations at Jagaddal have revealed an extensive mound, measuring 105 meters long by 85 meters, representing the archaeological remains of a Buddhist monastery. These findings provide valuable insights into the monastery's architecture, religious practices, and daily life. Visitors to Jagaddal Vihar can explore the scattered ancient mounds and deserted tanks that occupy a large area in Jagaddala village. While many of the ancient mounds have been destroyed over time, some surviving mounds offer a glimpse into the past. The site's serene atmosphere and historical significance make it a worthwhile destination for history enthusiasts and those seeking a deeper understanding of Bangladesh's Buddhist heritage.
